Good questions. Clear answers.
A few things worth knowing before you bring YellowHat into your family’s routine.
Is YellowHat Kids really free?
Yes. YellowHat Kids is completely free on the Android phone where it is installed. You can choose eligible apps, review flagged items and change selected apps or ignored words without a subscription or the Parent app. Parent alerts and remote controls require a per-device YellowHat Parent subscription, with supported plans starting from $0.99 per month. Localized store prices may differ.
Why add YellowHat Parent?
So you can find out when something is flagged without checking your child’s phone. Parent sends a generic push notification, then lets you open the app to review the encrypted alert title, concern and reason. It also provides remote controls. These features require an active subscription for that Kids device and internet connectivity; YellowHat Kids keeps working independently.
Do notifications stay on the phone?
Yes. YellowHat Kids uses YellowHat Offline AI to check notification content on the child’s phone. With Parent, alert titles and reasons are end-to-end encrypted; full notification text is excluded unless a subscribed parent explicitly enables encrypted sharing for future alerts.
Does it work without the internet?
Yes. After the initial YellowHat Offline AI download and setup, YellowHat Kids checks notification text and lets you review flagged items on the Android phone without internet. Messaging apps may still need internet to receive new messages. Parent alerts and remote controls need an internet connection.
Which app goes on which phone?
YellowHat Kids requires Android 13 or later on your child’s phone. YellowHat Parent goes on your phone and supports Android and iOS. Contact support for current store availability.
How do I connect the two apps?
Connecting is optional: YellowHat Kids works on its own. Sign in to YellowHat Parent and add a device. On the child’s Android phone, scan the Parent QR code or enter its pairing code in Kids. Activate the subscription for that device and allow Parent notifications if you want push alerts.
What does YellowHat monitor?
It checks notification text from the eligible apps a parent selects and flags potentially harmful language. Nothing is monitored until at least one app is chosen during setup. A parent can later update the selected apps and add ignored words that should not influence analysis. Kids also checks Android’s app-level notification permission for selected launcher-visible apps that declare it. It cannot inspect individual notification channels, show a complete conversation or check content that never appears in a notification.
What can a parent see in an alert?
In YellowHat Parent, a parent can see the title, concern category, severity, source app and reason. Current Kids versions end-to-end encrypt the title and reason for registered Parent installations. Full notification text is off by default; a subscribed parent can explicitly enable encrypted sharing, which applies only to future alerts. Lock-screen push notifications remain generic.
Do I need a subscription?
Not for YellowHat Kids. On-device checking, flagged-item review and settings changed on the Android phone are free. Parent alerts and remote controls require a separate subscription for each Kids device, with supported plans starting from $0.99 per month. Review the localized price, renewal period and store terms in Parent before purchasing.
Can I change which apps and words are checked?
Yes. A parent chooses at least one app during Kids setup and can update the selected apps later. A parent can also add ignored words or short phrases that are removed before safety analysis without changing the original notification. Changes made directly in Kids are free; remote changes from YellowHat Parent require an active subscription for that device.
Why might an alert be delayed or missing?
On the child’s phone, make sure setup and the YellowHat Offline AI download are complete, notification access is allowed, the app is selected and that app can send notifications. Android background and battery settings can affect Kids. For Parent alerts, check both phones’ connectivity, the device link, the Parent notification permission and the device subscription. YellowHat can miss or misjudge content, so a missing alert does not mean there is no risk.
What do Offline and Protection stopped mean in Parent?
For a subscribed linked device, Offline means YellowHat Kids has not answered recent connectivity checks; it does not by itself mean the app was removed. Protection stopped means the linked Kids installation can no longer maintain its protected connection. Open YellowHat Kids on the child’s phone and follow the status shown there. Parent keeps the last connected time visible instead of presenting an offline device as actively monitored.
What happens if YellowHat Kids is reinstalled?
A reinstall can request permission to reconnect to the existing child device in YellowHat Parent. Parent shows the phone requesting access and the device it wants to recover. Approve only if you recognize the phone; otherwise decline the request and review the child device directly.
How do I remove my information?
Use Android’s app storage controls to remove local Kids data. In YellowHat Parent, Settings → Delete Account removes the Parent account and its YellowHat server data. Unlinking, uninstalling and cancelling a store subscription are separate actions; store billing must be cancelled through Google Play or the App Store.
